The Barefoot Urbanist
The Barefoot Urbanist is a study of informal urban development in several Latin American cities including, Mexico City, Bogota, Rio de Janeiro and Lima and was done with a grant from the Viñoly Foundation in New York City. It was published by the Viñoly Foundation along with three other Viñoly grants in the book "Pressures and Distortion" Edited by Ned Kaufman in 2012.
The Barefoot Urbanist includes the analysis and study of 14 different progressive settlements. Through the evaluation of these projects we have observed an ample set of practices in a diversity of conditions. Our study includes the following sites: Six in Mexico City, three in Rio de Janeiro, two in Lima, and three in Bogota.
The study includes the proposal of development guidelines that will help to coordinate the efforts of all stakeholders involved, promoting an open and structured planning process and the help of local authorities to create alternate opportunities for urban development.
